The app aimed to become a place to gather info:

who rents;

what rentals are in demand

what budget people have

Mind Map

The app has a typical renting flow with two user roles: a landlord and a renter

Wireframes

We created wireframes to put the mind map into screens and lay out blocks in the interface

London has soaring rental prices,
so people are willing to get a room instead of an apartment

The landlord and the renter can communicate in the app but they have to meet in person to sign the agreement or secure a deposit

Two roles

The app has two user roles, the landlord and the renter. A user can switch the role at any time. The roles have different onboarding and navigation.

Design

The client gave us a typical real estate reference — Airbnb. So we chose a black and white palette with one accent color as in the example but changed the accent to violet.

We decided to make a slider for setting the rental price range. This is a common solution that looks good and the clients liked it.

Looks good ≠ usable

But in the development stage, the slider turned out to be unusable. The real estate market has a wide price range that cannot fit in the slider. We replaced it with manual price range settings so users can set an exact range.

Important details

A chat is a common app feature but we can make it better. When a user opens the chat in Post-a-room, they first see a message that they haven't seen, not the last sent one.

I'm just watching

The app has a guest mode that allows to browse ads in the app without signing up.

This is how we allow users to evaluate the product before sharing their personal data.

Users are asked to sign up via their phone number or other accounts when they want to save the ads, send a message to the landlord, or place their own ads.

Result

This is not our first real estate app, so we don't worry about the app quality. But this app has an unusual purpose. We're waiting for its release to see if Post-a-room fulfills its assignment.
